SERENA Williams beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4 7-5 in the US Open women's final to ensure she will move past Ana Ivanovic and become the top-rated player in the WTA Tour rankings.
This is the ninth time that a grand slam final has featured two women battling for world No.1 honours.
Serbia's Ivanovic was upset in the second round at Flushing Meadows, setting the stage for her tumble to third in the rankings behind the US Open winner and runner-up.
No.4 seed Williams has spent 57 prior weeks atop the rankings since first claiming the top spot in July 2002.
No.2 seed Jankovic spent one week atop the rankings last month, becoming the 18th woman to claim the honour.
