Inaugural Asian Beach Games to Begin with Colorful, Colossal Ceremony

SANUR, Bali, Indonesia – Spectators from around the world will witness sports history when the 1st Asian Beach Games get underway in Bali, Indonesia, Oct. 18, with a colorful Opening Ceremony infused with a showing of Indonesian culture meant to inspire the world. The Ceremony will be held at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana, a monumental cultural park in Nusa Dua.

The President of the Republic of Indonesia H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Madame Ani Bambang Yudhoyono as well as other heads of state are expected to attend the Ceremony. As distinguished guests arrive, 80 dancers will perform the “Welcome Dance,” a medley of West Sumatera, Kalimantan, Ambonese and Javanese dances contemporarily choreographed by Boi G. Sakti.

Other highlights of the Opening Ceremony include 845 dancers performing a 12-minute dance choreographed by Sentot S. The dance, which depicts the rich history of host country Indonesia, ends with a special collaboration of three Asian Divo: Andre Hehaussa (Indonesia), Christian Bautista (Phillipines), and Mark Lazaro (India) singing “To Be One” with the Erwin Gutawa Orchestra.

Athletes and officials from the 45 participating countries will also march in the Ceremony. For the athletes parade, the athletes will be divided into five groups based on their regions: West Asia (13 countries), Central Asia (5 countries), South Asia (8 countries), East Asia (8 countries) and South East Asia (11 countries). Back-to-back home runs for the Twins? That’s like two straight laughs at a Dane Cook show. The Twins don’t hit home runs. They nibble and pick and gnaw. They’ve turned small ball into a verb. And here they were, in the game their manager deemed the most important this season, a game that could’ve shattered their glass slipper, launching balls like they hadn’t all year.

Delmon Young’s homer pre-empted Kubel from doffing his cap and put the Chicago White Sox on notice that the Twins weren’t going down without a fight, not in their own building. The din from Kubel’s homer hadn’t ceded when Young put the exclamation point on the Twins’ 9-3 victory Tuesday to pull them within 1½ games of the White Sox in the AL Central with two remaining in this series at the Metrodome.

“I was in the dugout, giving all the high fives, and I looked up and Delmon had hit one,” Kubel said. “When you hear the crowd, you know.”

Though they weren’t packed to the rafters, 35,225 strong witnessed the Twins’ 50th home win in 76 games. And they saw an offense that somehow scored the fourth-most runs in the major leagues in spite of hitting the second-fewest home runs.

TOKYO, Sept 18, 2008 (AFP) - Defending champions Lee Chong Wei and Tine Rasmussen struggled into the Japan Open quarter-finals Thursday with the Malaysian world number one complaining of post-Olympics fatigue.

Lee survived a second-game fightback by local hope Sho Sasaki to win 21-7, 22-20 while Denmark's Rasmussen came from behind to beat China's Wang Lin 10-21, 21-11, 21-18.

Lee, who lost last month's Olympic final to China's Lin Dan, had also looked unconvincing in his first-round 25-23, 21-8 win over unfancied Chinese Zhu Weilun.

"I still feel tired as I only took a week off after the Olympics and prepared for this tournament as I wanted to take part in as many events as possible," the 25-year-old.

"I lost my concentration and wound down after an 11-3 lead in the second game. That's why I was overtaken that way."

Lee faces a first ever match-up with China's 150th-ranked Qiu Yanbo in the last eight.

"I may recover from fatigue somewhat in due course. But whether or not I am tired, I want to take one match at a time in a careful manner," he said.

Qiu progressed when fifth-seeded Indonesian Simon Santoso pulled out with back pain when 21-10, 8-6 down. Santoso injured his back in winning last week's Taiwan Open.

In other men's matches, Indonesian second seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro outclassed Sairul Amar Ayob 21-8, 21-7 to face another Malaysian, Muhammad Roslin Hashim, who beat Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana 21-17, 21-15.

Ex-Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat beat Denmark's Jan Jorgensen 21-10, 21-12 to set up a quarter-final with European championship runner-up Joachim Persson, who overcame Tommy Sugiarto 21-14, 21-15.

Rasmussen, the All-England winner and women's second seed, needed 48 minutes to overcome Wang as top-seeded Lu Lan of China made short work of Japan's Kaori Imabeppu 21-7, 21-8.

"I had to work really hard and, maybe, I didn't play too clever," said Rasmussen, 29, whose career has blossomed after winning her first major title here last year.

"I think I was against the (air conditioners') wind in the first game and I didn't get enough length. So Wang could just stand on it and put pressure on me," Rasmussen added.

Rasmussen faces a tough quarter-final against Hong Kong's world silver medallist Wang Chen, who reached the last eight on a walkover against China's Jiang Yanjiao.

"I think it's going to be a 50-50, open-ended match," said the Dane, who has already won three Super Series events this year in Malaysia, England and Singapore.

"I have to adjust many things and I have to play better if I want to win."

The 200,000-dollar Japan Open is the seventh leg of badminton's 12-round Super Series.

Popovich leaves with 4 Paralympic golds

Here’s something for the resume: four gold medals and two silver in swimming at the Paralympics. Even better, she won 10 gold medals in the last two Paralympics, bringing her total to 14. Add to that five silver medals in her three Paralympics.

Popovich might have gone home with six gold in Beijing, but she had to settle for silver in two weekend races—the 50-meter butterfly on Saturday and the 50 freestyle on Sunday.

“Four long years of hard work and training paid off,” said Popovich, who trained for the games with the Colorado State swim team. Six days a week, as much as five hours a day, Popovich has been working toward Beijing, particularly after graduating last December.

“I guess I should find a job sometime soon,” she said, with the swimming competition ending Monday and the Paralympics finishing Wednesday.

The 23-year-old swimmer has been compared to Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.

“We have a lot of drive and determination. We’re extremely competitive both in swimming and just in life,” she said. “To even be mentioned in the same sentence … is a tremendous honor for me, to be seen in the same light as that is huge.”

Popovich has a form of dwarfism and competes against other child-sized athletes and swimmers with other disabilities.

She churns through the water with thick arms and powerful legs, beating opponents like Huang Min of China by more than 6 seconds in the 200-meter individual medley and nearly 4 seconds in the 100-meter breaststroke.

But it was also the slender Huang who dashed Popovich’s hopes of pulling off another all-gold performance at the Paralympics, winning the gold in the 50-meter butterfly Saturday.

“Popovich has won lots of golds, but this one belongs to me,” Huang said. “Everyone who’s truly devoted can be successful.”

Popovich, selected by teammates as one of four captains of the U.S. squad, smiled and gamely answered questions after Huang ruined her perfect record in Beijing.

Popovich’s dominance in the pool is testament to her hard work.

“I’d love to say I could just hop in the water and swim fast,” she said. “Unfortunately that’s not the case.”

On Sunday, she was upset by American teammate Cortney Jordan in the 50 freestyle. Jordan finished in 33.84 seconds, with Popovich at 33.92. It was Jordan’s first gold in these games to go with two silver—100 freestyle and 400 freestyle—and a bronze in the 200 individual medley.

“I was so shocked,” Jordan said, still panting five minutes after the race. “I had no idea that was going to happen. Oh, my gosh, I can’t believe I just did that. It was amazing and something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Popovich was again a gracious loser.

“I put my best effort forth,” she said. “Cortney just had a phenomenal swim tonight. She did wonderful, she deserves it.”

The United States had another four-gold winner in Jessica Long, who fell short in an effort for a fifth gold Sunday and finished fifth in the 50 freestyle. Long won gold in the 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 400 free. She also won silver in the 100 backstroke and bronze in the 100 breaststroke.

At Colorado State, Popovich approached the swim team with a simple question: “Any way I can swim?”

The team agreed to let her try. She’s been with them for five years, doing the same drills and workouts as the able-bodied athletes, though she makes adjustments such as swimming 350 meters instead of 400 to stay with the group.

Popovich majored in health and exercise science. Like any other athlete in school, keeping on top of a busy scedule was no easy thing.

“To put school and swimming together and make it work and be successful in both—managing your life to fit both things—that was a challenge,” she said.

“I’ve looked into going into medical school—that’s definitely in the plans. There’s a lot of different things. I’m not quite sure what to do.”

But one thing’s definite: swimming.

“I have no thoughts of retiring,” she said.

Valentino Rossi became the winningest rider in MotoGP history with his victory at the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP on Sept. 14 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Local favorite Nicky Hayden, from nearby Owensboro, Ky., finished second on his No. 69 Repsol Honda Team Honda/Michelin in the shortened race, his first podium finish since August 2007.

The victory, which came under tough wind and rain conditions due to the passing remnants of Hurricane Ike, gave five-time MotoGP World Champion Rossi his 69^th win in the premier class, one more than fellow Italian legend Giacomo Agostini.

Rossi, rider of the No. 46 Fiat Yamaha Team Yamaha/Bridgestone, said he appreciates the significance of victory at Indianapolis.

"It is quite special, yes," he said. "I hear that Indianapolis have just the top class of all the motorsports. So from Indy to NASCAR and now in motorcycle we have MotoGP. So it's important. It is something right on the history. But especially I'm so happy because I like the track."

Rounding out the podium was Rossi's Fiat Yamaha teammate, rookie Jorge Lorenzo, in third on the No. 48 Yamaha/Michelin. Casey Stoner was fourth on the No. 1 Ducati Team Ducati/Bridgestone and Andrea Dovisioso was fifth on the No. 4 JiR Team Scot MotoGP Honda/Michelin.

Race officials red-flagged the race on the 20^th of 28 scheduled laps due to driving rain propelled by gusty winds. Rossi and Hayden were both adamant that officials made the right call, citing the blinding rain and gusts that, without warning, pushed their bikes side to side as they rocketed down the Speedway's main straightaway at 190 mph.

"The wind is very inconsistent and very strong," Rossi said. "You never know what's going to happen with the bike. Every lap, I look and I say, 'I hope for the red flag; I hope for the red flag.' It was a good decision to end the race."

Rossi took an 87-point victory over reigning World Champion Casey Stoner and can clinch his sixth MotoGP world title Sept. 28 at the Grand Prix of Japan at Motegi.

Hayden could not hide his emotions following the race, partly for claiming his first podium since finishing third at the Czech Republic in August 2007, but even more so because he led 12 of the 20 laps in front of family, friends and fans.

"Man, I had nothing to lose here," Hayden said. "I just had to go for it. The bike felt good in the wet. Man, it felt really good to be in the lead, and I felt quite comfortable. It's been a long time. I was thinking, 'This only happens in the movies.'

"I just want to thank the team, my family, my fans for sticking behind me. I'd like to thank the fans. We only had to be out there for 40 minutes, they've been out there all day in the rain."

Hayden's fellow American riders had mixed results. Three-time AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies, riding the No. 11 Rizla Suzuki MotoGP Suzuki/Bridgestone, finished sixth to become the highest-finishing wild-card rider of the season.

John Hopkins, of Ramona, Calif., finished 14^th on the No. 21 Kawasaki Racing Team Kawasaki/Bridgestone, one position ahead of Colin Edwards, the Houston native who finished 15^th on the No. 5 Tech 3 Yamaha/Michelin.

Top seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Patty Schnyder advanced to the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic on Wednesday, but it wasn’t as easy as Daniela would have liked.

The Slovak came through 6-1 7-5, but after controlling the first set with her stinging forehand and fine serving and returns, she was involved in a real battle once 121st-ranked Olga Savchuk got into her rhythm.

Hantuchova faced two break points in the opening game of the second set, saving both with service winners, and two more at 3-3. She saved those as well, one with an excellent forehand winner, but she found her back against the wall when the Ukrainian qualifier finally broke to lead 5-4.

But Hantuchova rose to the challenge, breaking for 5-5 when Savchuk hit a volley long, and after holding for 6-5 she broke once more with a fine crosscourt forehand winner.

It was a welcome victory for Hantuchova, who has struggled since returning from injury with just three wins in her last nine matches before she arrived in Bali.

"Obviously, she picked her game up a little bit in the second set," said Hantuchova. "She was more aggressive on her service games and was tough to break, and in the game she broke me she hit two very good returns.

"After she broke me I just tried to stay in there and break her right back, which I did. I was very pleased with that, and overall I was very pleased with my game, actually. It was a good test for me and I felt like I handled the big points pretty well."

Schnyder’s match also had some drama, although not because of the score. It rained on match point.

The Swiss left-hander was easily the better player as she faced 98th-ranked Meng Yuan of China. Maybe too much the better player, because Schnyder sometimes looked a little too casual after she had built a decent lead and taken the first set 6-2.

In the second set, Yuan’s persistence in the baseline rallies was rewarded when she broke for 2-1, forcing an error with a lob. But Yuan double-faulted to allow Schnyder to level again at 2-2, and Schnyder went on to serve for the match at 5-3.

Yuan, though, broke again and then held for 5-5, before Schnyder also held and then earned two match points on Yuan’s serve. Yuan saved the first, and then it rained as she faced a second. After play resumed, Schnyder finally closed out the match on her third match point, winning 6-2 7-5.

"I still don’t have 100 percent rhythm and it’s really, really tough after such a great US Open to find your intensity aand concentration and get into a tournament again. That’s what I have to improve," said Schnyder.

The other two matches of the day were routine, with fifth seed Francesca Schiavone beating Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3 6-2, and Marta Domachowska outlasting Jill Craybas 6-3 6-7(5-7) 6-4.

The victory marked the second of the eight gold medals Phelps would win at the Beijing Olympics. And up on the deck, Phelps -- amid teammates Garrett Weber-Gale and Cullen Jones -- let loose with a scream of sheer exultation.

2. Usain Bolt's 100m celebration

It's not supposed to be possible to win the glamour event of the Summer Games when, seven full strides from the finish line, you break form, lower your arms to your side, look around and then, as you cross, do a chest-bump thing to signify not only that you've won but done so in world-record time, 9.69 seconds. Usain Bolt of Jamaica did all of that -- the first of three finals, all gold medals, all world records.

3. Kyle Bennett's gnarly crash

In a preliminary round BMX moto -- moto is what they call a heat in BMX, which made its Olympic debut in Beijing -- Bennett was involved in a five-rider pile-up at the first turn. That turn produced crashes in eight of the 12 semifinal heats. Bennett's wreck left him with a dislocated shoulder. He was down for a long time, then got up, waved off the doctors and, his arm out of the socket, rode the rest of the course, steering with one hand, finished the race.

4. Dwyane Wade to Kobe Bryant

The U.S. men's basketball team, out for redemption, laid a 23-point preliminary-round beating on Greece -- retribution for a loss at the 2006 FIBA championships. The victory produced a play that underscored the athleticism, talent and bravado of the NBA stars on the U.S. team. In sequence: Dwyane Wade steals the ball. Wade's momentum carries him out of bounds along the wing edging toward halfcourt. He nonetheless has the quickness and court awareness to fire an alley-oop -- sideways, no less -- to Kobe Bryant. Who finishes with a monster slam.

5. Roger Federer's joy

The Swiss tennis star, with Stan Wawrinka, won Olympic gold in men's doubles. After all the money, all the titles, the fame, the glory -- Federer fought tears during the medals presentation. "Here you have the man who is arguably, with Sampras, the best-ever tennis player in the world. He has won everything. But the medal, the gold medal, he didn't have," International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge said.

6. Alicia Sacramone falls off the balance beam

It was a move she had done countless times: up and onto the beam. This time, though, in the team finals, Alicia Sacramone went up and lost her balance and came right back down. She would go on to miss a tumbling pass as well. The U.S. team would ultimately win silver -- the Chinese took gold -- and while the Americans did not lose because of Sacramone, she said, "I think I would feel a little better with myself if I didn't make those two mistakes."

7. Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor were all wet

Playing in a pelting rain, the two American beach volleyball stars repeated as Olympic champions, defeating a Chinese pair, Tang Jia and Wang Jie for the gold medal. On the medals stand, after the match that forever made plain that beach volleyball is athletic competition of the highest rank, way more than just sunglasses and cheerleaders, the two held hands while proudly singing The Star-Spangled Banner.

8. Men's volleyball wins for country and coach

At the start of the Olympics, U.S. men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon's father-in-law was stabbed to death in Beijing. McCutcheon stepped away from his job to take care of his family. But his team, stirred by the tragedy, began an incredible run which ended with a 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 victory over defending champion Brazil -- a team that they were never expected to beat. "It hasn't been easy, not that it was ever going to be easy. But when you throw in the emotional load that the team has had to bear collectively, for them to come through and be this good is a wonderful achievement," McCutcheon said.

Federer Beat Murray at US Open

NEW YORK (AP)—Roger Federer owns a dazzling array of shots, a keen court sense and a winning disposition.

He’s also got a pretty good set of ears. And he could hear what the tennis world was saying about him: At 27, his reign at the top was over.

“I was aware of it,” he said.

Whatever, that version of the vulnerable Federer was nowhere to be seen at center court Monday. Instead, the Roger of old returned, overwhelming Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 to win his fifth straight U.S. Open championship and 13th Grand Slam title.

“I felt like I was invincible for a while again,” Federer said.

Federer won his first major title of the year, breezing through three sets without a double-fault and leading 36-16 in winners. He earned nearly half his points at net, a skill he honed while winning the Olympic gold medal in doubles.

When Murray’s final shot landed in the net, Federer fell to his knees on the blue court at Arthur Ashe Stadium and rolled onto his back.

“I always knew that if I were to get one Slam under my belt, especially the last one, things weren’t looking that bad, like everybody was talking about,” he said.

Because, for sure, people were talking. His reaction to all that jabbering?

“Sometimes, to a point, a bit annoyed because all sorts of crazy people started writing me and trying to reach me, telling me I need some help either mentally or physically,” he said. “You’re laughing, but it’s the way it goes. People come out of the closet and think they can start helping me now. It’s just a pain.

“For me, this sort of puts them to rest a little bit and calms down the phones at my parents’ a little bit, which I’m happy about,” the Swiss ace said.

While Federer enjoyed a glass of champagne with family and friends inside the locker room, his dad wandered out.

“Maybe you can’t win everything,” proud pop Robert said. “After the French Open, you could see many (negative) comments saying, ‘Federer is gone,’ ‘Federer will never win another Grand Slam.’ And Federer proved the opposite.”

Federer won’t leave New York with the No. 1 ranking—after 4 1/2 years on top, he lost that to Rafael Nadal—but the No. 2 seed sure enjoyed getting the silver trophy, the $1.5 million winner’s check and a new Lexus.

All in all, a nice way to end a season that Federer began with a bout of mononucleosis.

The sixth-seeded Murray went into his first Grand Slam final with a 2-1 lifetime record against the champ. But trying to become the first British man to win the U.S. Open since Fred Perry in 1936, he never had a chance.

“I came up against, in my opinion, the best player ever to play the game,” Murray said. “He definitely set the record straight today.”

The 21-year-old Scotsman paid tribute to Federer when they met at the net.

“He told me that it was a great tournament for me. I said that I agreed with everyone that he’d had a terrible year,” Murray kidded.

“Making the semis of Australia, final of the French, the final at Wimbledon — playing one of the best matches of all-time—winning a gold medal, and obviously winning the U.S. Open,” he said. “I told him that he had a phenomenal year, regardless of what anyone said.”

Federer became the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win this tournament so many times in a row. He’s now within one major title of matching Pete Sampras’ career record of 14.

“One thing’s for sure,” Federer said, “I’m not going to stop at 13. That would be terrible.”

This win also made Federer the only man in tennis history to take five straight titles at two major tournaments.

“It’s nice to compare five U.S. Opens to five Wimbledons. Not many—nobody can do that,” he said.

Murray was the fifth different opponent Federer had played in the finals at Flushing Meadows during his run. The former U.S. Open junior champion won the opening coin toss and, based on his previous success, chose to let Federer serve first.

Federer won the first game by taking four straight points.

Murray’s best chance to stay in the match came in the second set with score tied at 2. Down 15-40, Federer hit a shot that looked long, but Murray kept it in play and wound up losing the point.

Murray walked to the spot to see if there was a mark, having lost his chance to call for an instant-replay challenge. Too bad, too, because a television replay showed the ball was out.

Instead of being up 3-2 and serving, Murray watched Federer rally back to win the game.

“That was key,” Federer said. “After that, I began to play freely, the way I usually do.”

By the third set, it was no contest as Federer went up 5-0. Murray won two games and a couple more ovations from the crowd, then it was soon over.

This is the ninth time that a grand slam final has featured two women battling for world No.1 honours.

Serbia's Ivanovic was upset in the second round at Flushing Meadows, setting the stage for her tumble to third in the rankings behind the US Open winner and runner-up.

No.4 seed Williams has spent 57 prior weeks atop the rankings since first claiming the top spot in July 2002.

No.2 seed Jankovic spent one week atop the rankings last month, becoming the 18th woman to claim the honour.

US Open Final Postponed by Tropical Storm Hanna

Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams have to wait until Sunday to meet in the US Open final with the added incentive of the WTA's world No.1 ranking along with the final grand slam title of 2008.

The final was scheduled for Saturday night but was postponed after the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna dumped rain and strong winds on the New York area.

The weather also delayed the completion of the men's semi-final between Andy Murray and Spain's world No.1 Rafael Nadal, with the Scotsman leading 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 2-3.

When the women's decider is held, it will only be the ninth time a grand slam final will also determine the top spot in the WTA rankings.

The No.1 ranking will change hands in Flushing Meadows because Serbian star Ana Ivanovic was knocked out of the tournament in the second round.

The last grand slam final to feature two women battling for the world number one was the 2004 Australian Open where Justin Henin beat Kim Clijsters.

It has been 13 years since the top spot has changed hands in a grand slam final. Germany's Steffi Graf beat Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the 1995 Wimbledon final to regain the World No.1.

Both Jankovic and Williams have held top spot before but Serena is the more decorated of the two having held it for 57 weeks beginning in July 2002.

Williams is enjoying a resurgence in her game while Jankovic made it to her first grand slam final in 21 tries.

"I am putting in the effort both on and off the court," said Williams who hasn't been to the US Open final in six years.

"Doubles helped too. I am playing a lot more and having more consistent results."

Getting to her first final is a huge relief for Jankovic.

Before she beat Elena Dementieva 6-4 6-4 in Friday's semi-final she had been considered the best player to never make it to a grand slam final.

"I really want to do this and I think it's about time for me to make that step forward to break that barrier and go a long way," said Jankovic who held the No.1 spot for just a week last month.

"I want to win a grand slam and this is why I came here."

This will be the seventh career meeting between Jankovic and Williams with each winning three times. Williams won their last meeting earlier this year in Miami 6-1 5-7 6-3.

They have never met in a final before but Jankovic has won both times they squared off in a semi-final in Los Angeles (2006) and Dubai (2005).

Coinciding with the country's 63rd independence anniversary, the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) will kick off the 2008 Pertamina Independence Cup international soccer tournament in Jakarta. Named as Pertamina Independence Cup because PT. Pertamina support this event as General Sponsor.

National teams from Libya, Myanmar, Brunei Darussalam and two teams from Indonesia will be competing at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium for the 18-carat gold cup and Rp 200 million (US$22,222) in prize money.

The competition, which is back after seven years of absence, will run from Aug. 21 to 29.

"Two Indonesian teams will compete -- the senior team and the under-21s," PSSI Secretary General Nugraha Besoes said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The senior team will use the tournament as a warm-up session ahead of the Asian Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup in December and the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in January 2009. The under-21 team will be practicising for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be held in Laos next year.

It will be the eighth time the tournament has been held since its inception in 1985.

"The last Independence Cup was held in Jakarta in 2000. That year Indonesia grabbed the title," Nugraha said.

Indonesia won the 2000 tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over Iraq in the final. The host also finished the tournament as the winners in 1987, beating Algeria 2-1 in the final.

Nugraha said they also invited teams from Europe, United States and Japan this year.

"But they turned down the invitation. The European countries have just wrapped up their Euro Cup, while the U.S. team is currently starting their regular competition and Japan is grooming players for the next World Cup."

Among the champions of the Independence Cup since its inception are Chile (1985), Algeria (1986), China (1988), Australia (1990), Malaysia (1992) and Thailand (1994).

According to competition chief Herman Ago, the 2008 Independence Cup will feature two matches a day, scheduled at 6.30 p.m. and 9.15 p.m. Some 56,000 tickets will be available for each match, with prices ranging between Rp 20,000 and Rp 100,000.

Just how good is Michael Phelps? Good enough to stop the traffic in downtown Beijing so George Bush's motorcade could make its way to the Aquatic centre, certainly; and good enough to fill the thousands of seats that line the pool, terraced steeply upwards towards the roof.

But is he good enough to do what all these people are expecting him to do? What they've come to see him do? Good enough to justify the extraordinary hype that's greasing the wheels of all the American media's coverage? Good enough, in fact, to do what no other athlete in the 112-year history of the Games has done and win eight golds at a single Olympics?

I'm not sure he is. To win eight gold medals, to do what has never been done before, an athlete needs to belong in the tiniest percentile of sportsmen, the smallest, most elite group: the greatest of all time.

Well now he's one down, winning gold in this morning's 400m individual medley in a time that beat his own world record by 1.41 seconds. His closest challenger in this event, Hungary's Laszlo Cseh, was 2.32 seconds behind.

The man who had been built up as the main threat before the race, Phelps' team-mate Ryan Lochte, said beforehand that if they were level going into the final 50m of freestyle, he was sure he would win. They were, almost, level, and Cseh was only a sliver behind. All three men had been inside world record pace at that point. But Phelps accelerated away. There was no sense that either Cseh or Lochte could stay with him.

He finished more than a length clear of either. It was a staggering swim, and yes, for the first time I thought that maybe, just maybe, Phelps is touched with genuine greatness, and that our memories of what he does here may echo through all future Olympics, just as those of Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens do.

The odds are against it. We're always too ready to anoint the athletes of our own moment as being "great", but history is a more severe judge.

The US needs Phelps to be great; he is at the very centre of the huge business that is American broadcasting and the media have used him as the hook on which they've hung their coverage. If you're American, Phelps is the biggest reason you have for watching the Games. But you can't award him the title before he's won.

What Phelps is attempting is as hard as any athletic feat in history, but he shouldn't get to wear the laurel until he's done it, and he's an awful long way from doing that. He'll be hoping that the abrupt manner in which the Star Spangled Banner cut out moments before its climax as he stood on the rostrum wasn't an omen for his own progress.

Crucially, Phelps' achievement will hinge on his ability to inspire his team-mates in the relays to follow him through in his race to greatness. That may be what undoes him. His next event is the 4x100m freestyle final. The Americans will be pitched against the Australians and, more worryingly for them, the French, who have four of the fastest 15 freestylers in the world in their squad, including world record holder Alain Bernard.

If Phelps is great, he will need to inspire his underdog team to success. It is a huge task. But it is exactly the kind of thing he needs to do to prove that he is not just the finest swimmer at the Games, but one of the greatest athletes in history.

Rafael Nadal wins gold medal in Olympic tennis

BEIJING (AP)—As Rafael Nadal stood in front of the medal podium, his nation’s flag draped across his back like a cape, he looked a little like a Spanish Superman.

In tennis, he is.

Already assured of the No. 1 ranking, Nadal was No. 1 at the Olympics. He won a gold medal Sunday, overcoming two set points in the second set and holding every service game to beat Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

The gold medal was the first ever for Spain in Olympic tennis, and another milestone in an astounding summer surge by Nadal, who will officially end Roger Federer’s 41/2-year reign atop the rankings Monday. Nadal has won 38 of his past 39 matches, including victories over Federer in the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon.

“Nowhere in my best dreams I can imagine something like what I did this year,” Nadal said. “I know how difficult it is to win these things, and especially here, because you only have one chance every four years.”

The mystery of Michael Phelps' iPod playlist

In the long, storied history of Fourth-Place Medal's Investigative Unit (founded: Monday), one question has been asked by our readers more than any other. Today, on our five-day anniversary, we will attempt to tackle the biggest Olympic mystery of the Beijing Games: what is Michael Phelps listening to on his iPod?

In nearly every camera shot of Michael Phelps on dry land, he can be seen with iPod headphones dangling from his ears. The earbuds are a ubiquitous presence in the ready room and on the starting block; they're just as much a part of Phelps' 'uniform' as goggles and a swim cap. About two minutes prior to the start of a race, Phelps sheds the iPod along with his warm-ups. So, what is he listening to?

Podcasts of NPR's This American Life and Dylan live at The Supper Club. No wait, that's my iPod. Phelps listens to hip-hop music on his. He says it helps motivate him before a race.

While his pre-race tracklist varies, Phelps has said that "I'm Me" by Lil' Wayne has been on his playlist in Beijing. The track, off Weezy's EP "The Leak" features the line:

Yes I am the best/and no I ain't positive I'm definite/I know the game like I'm reffing it

That's about the only lyric that's printable on a family blog.

Other artists that populate Phelps' iPod include: Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, Eminem and Outkast. (What, no 'Pac?) Occasionally, he'll throw some techno into the mix, but usually keeps things rap-centric. Phelps doesn't speak much about the specific songs he's listening to, but he did tell NBC in 2004 that Eminem's "'Til I Collapse" was on his most-played list at Athens. In 2005, he created a playlist for the website Rhapsody that included the songs "Roses" by Outkast, "Burn" by Usher, "Overnight Celebrity" by Twista and "Smile" by G-Unit.

Mystery: solved.

The mystery of the showering divers

Over the last three nights, NBC has led its primetime Olympic coverage with synchronized diving. According to the stacks of letters that have poured into the Fourth-Place Medal Investigative Unit Headquarters, you've all been watching but are baffled by one facet of the competition. In that case, you're in the right place. After successful forays into the cases of Cullen Jones' disappearance and the identity of the hot Paraguayan, Fourth-Place Medal will today tackle the mystery of the showering divers.

After completing a dive, competitors swim to a ladder, climb out of the pool and head immediately to a bank of showers that sit adjacent to the diving boards. Then, in full view of the crowd and NBC cameras, they shower off. Divers keep their suits on, of course, usually appearing only to rinse off their hair and arms. Oftentimes, the divers will receive their scores while still showering off. What's the purpose of this?

Theories have ranged from 'to get the chlorine off' to 'they want to have fun' -- seriously, that last one is a direct quote from NBC's diving analyst, Cynthia Potter. Neither are the reason.

Divers shower in between each dive to keep their muscles warm after getting out of the pool. The temperature of the pool water and the air are usually different (the pool is usually around 80 degrees, with the air temperature between 68 and 72 degrees). This difference can cause muscle tightness. To combat this, divers warm up in either the showers or a hot tub.

Mystery: solved. (Although we're still a bit unclear as to why the showers are out in the open.The water cube cost over $200 million to build. They couldn't have put a privacy wall in?!)
